Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI announced on Tuesday 31 October that Turkey had refused, on the same day, the flag State consent to inspect MV KOSOVAK requested by IRINI, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2292 on the arms embargo against Libya. The container ship left Ambarli in Turkey on 31 October bound for Misrata in Libya.
This is the 11th time that Turkey has refused an inspection by the operation, according to IRINI.
“The Security Council calls upon all UN members to cooperate with inspections”, said the operation on X (formerly Twitter).
Since its launch in March 2020, IRINI had, as of 1 October 2023, monitored 11,863 ships, visited 563 ships with the consent of their captains, boarded and inspected 26 suspect ships and diverted 3. Of the 82 recommendations to inspect suspect ships in the ports of EU Member States, 64 were carried out.
The operation has also produced 45 special reports for the UN Panel of Experts on Libya. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
