European Commission gives go-ahead for €2.4 billion Czech measure to support production of biomethane

On Tuesday 31 October, the European Commission announced that it had authorised €2.4 billion in Czech aid to support the construction and operation of “sustainable” biomethane production systems.

Under this scheme, the aid will take the form of a “green bonus” that will be granted, until 31 December 2025, to biomethane producers for each MWh of biomethane produced for a period of 20 years.

The scheme will be open to biomethane producers holding a production licence in the Czech Republic. The Commission specifies that to be eligible for this aid, the biomethane produced by these companies will have to comply with the requirements of the European directive on renewable energy.

This measure should mainly benefit small and medium-sized enterprises and renewable energy communities with projects of up to 6 MW installed capacity.

The Commission found that the Czech aid scheme complied with European state aid rules, in particular Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU and the 2022 guidelines on state aid for climate, environmental protection and energy.
