Inflation estimated at 2.9% in October and GDP growth down by 0.1% in third quarter in euro area

Annual inflation in the euro area is estimated at 2.9% in October 2023, down from 4.3% in September, according to a flash estimate published by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) on Wednesday 31 October.

In terms of the main components of inflation in the euro area, food, alcohol and tobacco should see the highest annual rate in October (7.5%), followed by services (4.6%), industrial goods excluding energy (3.5%) and energy (-11.1%).

The rise in prices was highest in Slovakia (7.8%), Croatia (6.7%) and Slovenia (6.6%), and lowest in Belgium (-1.7%), the Netherlands (-1.0%) and Italy (1.9%). Inflation was 3.0% in Germany, 3.5% in Spain and 4.5% in France.

GDP. In the third quarter, compared with the previous quarter, seasonally-adjusted GDP fell by 0.1% in the euro area and rose by 0.1% in the European Union, according to Eurostat, which points out that these preliminary estimates are based on incomplete data.

Of the thirteen Member States for which data are available, Latvia (0.6%) recorded the biggest increase in its national GDP, followed by Belgium (0.5%) and Spain (0.3%). The biggest falls were recorded in Ireland (-1.8%), Austria (-0.6%) and the Czech Republic (-0.3%).

GDP rose by 0.3% in Spain, remained stable in Italy (0.0%) and France (0.1%), and fell in Germany (-0.1%). (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
