24/10/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 24 October, members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries declared that improving governance, continuing with restocking, combating migration barriers, and escalating the fight against illegal fishing will contribute to better implementation of the Eel Regulation. In adopting (17 votes in favour and 4 abstentions) the report by Bert-Jan Ruissen (ECR, Dutch) on this issue, MEPs have called on EU countries to better manage eel stock based on current EU rules. Restrictions on eel fishing can only be established within the framework of national plans, based on the best scientific data available, and with compensation for fishermen and fisherwomen, according to MEPs.
