24/10/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 24 October, the European Parliament’s Committee on Gender Equality (FEMM) adopted an opinion urging the EU Council to include hate crimes and hate speech in the list of European crimes. Spearheaded by Vera Tax (S&D, Dutch), the text will complement the position of the Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) (see EUROPE 13236/16). It places particular emphasis on the need to recognise gender-based hate crimes and hate speech as a specific form of this category of offence. It also calls on the European Commission to produce a report on anti-gender movements in the EU. Finally, it calls for the “underlying causes of hate speech and hate crimes against women, girls and LGBTIQ+ people” to be tackled. Compromise amendments (all adopted): https://aeur.eu/f/985 (HS)
