10/10/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 9 October in Luxembourg, the European Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, confirmed the Commission’s intention to present a directive revising the current 2009 framework on European Works Councils, as required by the procedure. “We are of course aware that the social partners have quite divergent opinions and that there is no possibility of entering into negotiations, because the trade union side does not consider the time appropriate. The Commission will therefore continue its own work”, confirmed the Commissioner, as President Ursula von der Leyen had already indicated in September, during her State of the Union speech, that she would follow up the European Parliament’s own-initiative report. The directive revising the current 2009 text will be presented in early 2024. Last week, Europe’s ‘bosses’ once again expressed their rejection of a new directive (see EUROPE 13265/30). (SP)
