Emmanuel Macron believes Franco-German agreement on reform of electricity market “within reach

10/10/2023 (Agence Europe)As part of the Franco-German government seminar in Hamburg on Tuesday 10 October, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, were asked about the negotiations underway in the Council of the European Union on the reform of the European electricity market (see EUROPE 13262/5). Although both acknowledged that their approaches were different (on the role of nuclear energy and renewable energies) (see EUROPE 13268/8), they considered them to be “complementary” and reiterated that their priority was to “maintain our competitiveness and our ability to decarbonise our economies in the face of the rest of the world”. With regard to the negotiations, the French President indicated that “the Franco-German agreement” was “within reach”. “The next few days and weeks will enable us to finalise a solid agreement for ourselves and for Europe”, he concluded. The European energy ministers will meet on 17 October in Luxembourg. (PLD)
