Estonia to tax motor vehicles according to their CO2 emissions

10/10/2023 (Agence Europe)Mart Võrklaev, the Estonian Finance Minister, announced changes to the national tax on the registration of motor vehicles, based on their CO2 emissions, on Monday 9 October. The Estonian car fleet is one of the highest in Europe in terms of CO2 emissions, and car ownership is on the rise. This new tax will be used as a lever to shape Estonia’s future car fleet to make it more environmentally friendly. “The purpose of the tax is to direct people to make more sustainable choices when purchasing new vehicles”, commented the Minister in a press release. This registration tax will only be payable when the vehicle is first registered in Estonia. It will come into force at the beginning of 2025, and in 2026 for vehicles whose registration has been suspended. (AD)
