10/10/2023 (Agence Europe) – At the beginning of October, the European Union Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) published its 2023 report on the security of the electricity supply in the European Union. The document indicates a delay in harmonising the European framework for assessing the risks associated with the security of electricity. Despite the benefits of integrated markets during the energy crisis, disparities in implementation threaten to create unfair competition. The cost of capacity mechanisms has risen sharply; they have doubled since 2020, reaching €5.2 billion in 2022, with an expected increase of 40% in 2023. These mechanisms mainly support fossil fuels, putting the ecological transition at risk. Furthermore, failure to coordinate security measures could fragment the electricity market. ACER recommends an overhaul of the resource adequacy assessment and a better rationalisation of capacity mechanisms. Read the report: https://aeur.eu/f/8yy (NP)
