After fall of Dutch government, Mark Rutte leaves political life

10/07/2023 (Agence Europe)On Monday 10 July, the outgoing Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, announced in the Lower House that he would not stand for re-election in the early parliamentary elections triggered by the collapse of his ruling national coalition government last Friday. In office since 2010, the leader of the right-liberal VVD party is one of Europe’s longest-serving leaders. The Dutch government fell, in part because of differences over migration policy. A member of the coalition, the Protestant party ChristenUnie and the liberal centrists of D66 were opposed to the tightening of restrictions on the right of asylum in force in the Netherlands. The legislative elections will take place in the autumn, probably in November. (MB)
