Euro area residents invited to have their say on new euro banknotes

The European Central Bank (ECB) is preparing to issue a new series of euro banknotes in order to improve the security of future banknotes to prevent counterfeiting and minimise their environmental impact throughout their life cycle.

To this end, the ECB invited, on Monday 10 July, the euro area residents to express their views on seven themes pre-selected by the ECB Governing Council for the new banknotes (rivers, birds, European culture, hands, ideas and innovations that will shape Europe’s future, the reflection of European values in nature and our Europe, ourselves).

The public survey is open until 31 August.

At the same time, the ECB states that an independent research firm has been commissioned to put the same questions as those contained in the public survey to a representative sample of euro area residents.

By 2024, the future theme will be selected by the ECB Governing Council on the basis of the results of the surveys carried out.

The Governing Council will also open a competition and a survey on the design of the new banknotes. The Governing Council is expected to take a decision on the future design as well as the production and issue dates for the new series of banknotes in 2026.
