10/07/23 (Agence Europe) – On Saturday 8 July, EU High Representative Josep Borrell welcomed the news that the United States had carried out the complete destruction of its remaining chemical weapons stockpiles on 7 July, ahead of the September deadline. “The completion of the destruction work marks an important milestone in the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) 25 years after its entry into force. The Convention is a key element of the international non-proliferation and disarmament architecture”, stressed Mr Borrell in a press release. He assured that the EU would continue to provide political and financial support for the implementation of the CWC. On 26 June, the European foreign ministers approved a new voluntary contribution of €5.3 million for the activities of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for 2023-2026.
