On Thursday 29 June, the leaders of the countries of the European Union will discuss the renewal of relations with their Latin American counterparts ahead of the EU/CELAC summit to be held in Brussels on 17 and 18 July (see EUROPE 13196/15).
This summit will be an opportunity to strengthen a partnership based on “shared values, history and culture” and should be the starting point for a “regular” bi-regional dialogue, according to the draft conclusions that the European Council is expected to adopt.
The EU/CELAC summit is “one of the most important summits we'll have under this mandate”, said a European diplomatic source on Wednesday 28 June.
The EU27 will also stress the importance of tackling the climate challenge and threats to global security, preserving the rules-based international order, combating growing inequalities, harnessing the opportunities of digital change and diversifying supply chains.
