Ursula von der Leyen selects Iliana Ivanova to replace Mariya Gabriel as Commissioner

On the evening of Wednesday 28 June, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she had decided to propose to the Council and the European Parliament the appointment of Iliana Ivanova to the post of Commissioner, to replace Mariya Gabriel, who has become Bulgaria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

If selected, Ms Ivanova will be responsible for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.

Ms von der Leyen explained that on Tuesday 27 June she had held talks with the two candidates put forward by the Bulgarian government, Daniel Lorer and Iliana Ivanova. “Both candidates have shown great commitment to the European Union and to the job of Commissioner. They also have relevant experience for this post”, said the President.

Ms Ivanova has been a member of the European Court of Auditors since 2013 and was a member of the European Parliament between 2009 and 2012 and Vice-Chair of the Committee on Budgetary Control. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
