Tomas Tobé calls on EU to take action against Uganda’s anti-homosexuality act

05/06/2023 (Agence Europe)In a letter sent on 2 June to the EU High Representative and Vice-President of the Commission, Josep Borrell, the Chairman of the European Parliament’s Development Committee, Tomas Tobé, calls on the EU to take action following the promulgation of the anti-homosexuality act in Uganda. “The EU must do more than issuing a mere statement regretting the signing into force of the Act (see EUROPE 13190/37). The EU must use all available tools, such as taking action under the ‘essential elements’ clause of the Cotonou Agreement, while at the same time increasing support to Ugandan human rights defenders and lawyers that seek to challenge the law in court”, according to Mr Tobé. Violation of the essential elements of the Cotonou Agreement may lead to partial or even total suspension of cooperation (article 96) if prior political dialogue fails.
