30/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – The EU regrets the promulgation of Uganda’s anti-homosexuality law, which carries severe penalties, including the death penalty. “This law is contrary to international human rights law and to Uganda’s obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, including commitments on dignity and non-discrimination, and the prohibition of cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment”, stressed the High Representative of the Union, Josep Borrell, in a statement issued on Monday 29 May on behalf of the EU27. The EU reiterates Uganda’s obligation to protect all its citizens and ensure that their fundamental rights are respected. “Failure to do so will undermine relationships with international partners”, it warns. “The signing into law of the Anti-Homosexuality Act by the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is deplorable”, said Mr Borrell on his Twitter account.
