30/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 29 May, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, announced that early general elections would be held on 23 July, following a large conservative victory in municipal and regional elections on 28 May. The election was originally due to take place at the end of the year. These legislative elections will be held at the start of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2023. “We have seen the comment by the Prime Minister that of course Spain will carry out its duties as Presidency of the Council (of the EU), taking into account the fact that there will be elections in Spain, and we will work with Spain in order to make sure this is the case” so that “the EU’s legislative work can take its normal course”, European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer reacted.
