European Commission authorises a €1.3 billion Polish measure to help farmers pay insurance premiums

The European Commission announced on Tuesday 16 May that it had authorised a Polish aid scheme worth €1.3 billion to help agricultural producers pay up to 65%, under certain conditions, of their insurance premiums covering the risk of damage to certain plant products and animal species caused by climate disasters.

The aid is aimed at small, medium and large enterprises active in primary agricultural production in Poland which take out insurance with certain companies selected through a tender procedure.

These measures will be in place until 31 December 2027.

The Commission found the scheme to be in line with EU state aid rules, in particular Article 107(3)(c) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and the 2023 Guidelines for State aid in the agriculture and forestry sector and in rural areas.
