16/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has indicated in a press release that IOM member states elected American Amy E. Pope to be the organisation’s new director general on Monday, 15 May. Founded in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading intergovernmental organisation in the field of migration and is part of the United Nations system. Outgoing Director General António Vitorino of Portugal was also up for reelection. Ms. Pope will assume her duties on 1 October 2023—the start of a five-year term. According to several media outlets, the election for the post was marked by controversy, with the American having been accused of conducting an intense smear campaign against her Portuguese colleague.
