On Thursday 4 May, the EU Council adopted two assistance measures under the ‘European Peace Facility’ for the armed forces of the Republic of Moldova, amounting to €40 million, and the Georgian defence forces, amounting to €30 million.
The aim is to help strengthen national security, stability and resilience in the defence sector of these two countries, neighbours of Ukraine and Russia.
The assistance measure for Moldova covers a period of 36 months and will finance non-lethal equipment, supplies and services for the armed forces units, including technical training, where appropriate. The approved equipment includes air surveillance, mobility and transport, logistics, command and control and cyber defence equipment, the EU Council said in its statement.
This assistance was requested by Chisinau on 6 February 2023 and complements the assistance measures of €40 million adopted on 30 June 2022 (see EUROPE 12983/33) and €7 million adopted on 2 December 2021 (see EUROPE 12845/20).
The assistance measure for Georgia will finance non-lethal equipment, supplies and services for Georgian defence force units, including technical training, if required. The approved equipment includes engineering, command and control, medical, logistics and cyber defence equipment.
The assistance, which will cover a period of 36 months, was requested by Tbilisi on 8 February. It supplements the assistance measures of €20 million and €12.75 million, adopted on 1 December 2022 (see EUROPE 13075/25) and 2 December 2021 (see EUROPE 12845/20) respectively.
