Ministers of Union for the Mediterranean commit to building sustainable and safe cities

At the 3rd Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Ministerial Conference on Sustainable Urban Development, held on Thursday 4 May in Zagreb, ministers affirmed their strong commitment to promoting sustainable, resilient, safe and integrated urban development.

The Mediterranean region is warming 20% faster than the global average and is therefore very vulnerable to climate change. The Mediterranean basin also has one of the fastest rates of urbanisation in the world.

The ministers tasked the UfM regional platform on sustainable urban development to focus in the coming years on the implementation and monitoring of the UfM urban agenda through the UfM Strategic Urban Development Action Plan 2040 and its Housing Action Plan.

The ministerial conference was chaired by the UfM co-presidency, namely the EU, represented by the Commissioner for Cohesion, Elisa Ferreira, and Jordan, represented by its Minister of Public Works, Maher Hamdi Abuelsamen, in the presence of the UfM Secretary General, Nasser Kamel.

We are setting a clear path for further cooperation to achieve the green and digital transformation of our cities and to provide quality of life, decent jobs, a healthy environment and affordable housing in the years to come”, said Ferreira.
