EU to observe Sierra Leonean general elections

04/05/2023 (Agence Europe)In response to an invitation from the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, the EU will observe the Sierra Leonean general elections on 24 June 2023. MEP Evin Incir (S&D, Swedish) will lead the EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM). She was appointed Chief Observer by the EU’s High Representative Josep Borrell. “Over the last 21 years, Sierra Leoneans have built a hard-won peace. The forthcoming elections will be crucial for the future of the country as well as for the West Africa region,” Mr Borrell emphasised on 3 May. The EU EOM’s Core Team, consisting of 10 experts, will be in Freetown on 11 May. On 20 May, 28 long-term observers will be deployed throughout the country to follow the election campaign. The day of the election, 40 short-term observers will reinforce the mission. The EU EOM will remain in Sierra Leone until the electoral process has been completed. (AN)
