04/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – In response to an invitation from the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, the EU will observe the Sierra Leonean general elections on 24 June 2023. MEP Evin Incir (S&D, Swedish) will lead the EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM). She was appointed Chief Observer by the EU’s High Representative Josep Borrell. “Over the last 21 years, Sierra Leoneans have built a hard-won peace. The forthcoming elections will be crucial for the future of the country as well as for the West Africa region,” Mr Borrell emphasised on 3 May. The EU EOM’s Core Team, consisting of 10 experts, will be in Freetown on 11 May. On 20 May, 28 long-term observers will be deployed throughout the country to follow the election campaign. The day of the election, 40 short-term observers will reinforce the mission. The EU EOM will remain in Sierra Leone until the electoral process has been completed. (AN)
