The EU Council is expected to adopt a resolution with a strategy to strengthen customs cooperation in the field of law enforcement and its contribution to the EU’s internal security, according to an internal document seen by EUROPE.
The EU Council Law Enforcement Working Party plans to present both documents to the Permanent Representatives of the Member States during May.
In the version of the resolution copied to EUROPE, the EU27 call for increased coordination between customs authorities, law enforcement authorities and relevant agencies within the EU. Cooperation with authorities in third countries is also one of the needs identified to better understand cross-border crime.
The Member States also propose a strategy, in an eight-page document, which sets out a list of objectives. These include: - improving knowledge of the threats of cross-border crime, but also of existing cooperation tools; - training customs officers in information exchange; - better identification of the needs of customs to develop modern surveillance and investigation technologies, etc.
