EU Council adopts aid for Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Mali under European Peace Facility

On Thursday 2 December, the Council of the EU adopted decisions establishing four aid measures for Mali, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine under the European Peace Facility.

Mali. The €24 million measure over a period of 30 months will help strengthen the capacities of the Malian Armed Forces to enable them to conduct military operations to restore Mali’s territorial integrity and reduce the threat posed by terrorist groups, in conjunction with the EUTM Mali training mission. The EU will further professionalise the Malian Armed Forces in three main areas: support for the Non-Commissioned Office Academy in Banankoro, renovation of the training infrastructure in Sévaré Mopti and the provision of equipment to the supported units of the Malian Armed Forces.

This measure could be suspended if the conditions for its proper implementation are not met, warned the EU Council in its press release.

Whether the assistance measures are for the benefit of Ukraine, Georgia or Moldova, they should contribute to strengthening the capabilities of the armed forces of the three countries, including their ability to provide services to civilians in the event of a crisis or emergency.

Ukraine. €31 million over 36 months to help improve Ukraine’s overall resilience. In particular, it will finance military medical units, including field hospitals, engineering, mobility and logistics units, as well as cyber support.

Georgia. €12.75 million over a 36 month period, including the provision of non-lethal medical and engineering equipment and civilian-type mobility assets.

Moldova. €7 million over 36 months will help build the capacity of the Military Medical Service and the Engineering Battalion of the Moldovan armed forces. In particular, the EU will finance the provision of medical equipment and explosive ordnance disposal equipment. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
