19/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 19 April, the European Union took note of the Nicaraguan authorities’ decision to withdraw the accreditation granted to its new ambassador in Managua, Fernando Ponz, in reaction to a statement by the spokesperson of the European External Action Service (EEAS) criticising the systemic repression imposed by the Ortega regime on the political opposition and civil society over the past five years. “We remain convinced that fully fledged diplomatic relations and constructive dialogue should remain the norm in bilateral relations”, said EEAS spokesperson Peter Stano in response to a question from EUROPE. The EU has no plans to impose the same measure on the Nicaraguan ambassador to the European institutions. (MB)
