Citizens and stakeholders express their views on major societal challenges that concern Europe’s research programmes

The European Commission announced, on Wednesday 19 April, the publication of the results of the public consultation on the ‘past, present and future of the European Research and Innovation Framework Programmes for the period 2014-2027’ (see EUROPE 13109/21).

The 12-week consultation, which ended on 23 February, sought citizens’ and stakeholders’ assessments of the performance of two framework programmes for research and innovation: Horizon 2020 (for the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework) and Horizon Europe (for the 2021-2027 Multiannual Financial Framework).

For the participants in the consultation, the main societal challenges that the European research framework programmes has and will have to face are climate change, energy supply, loss of biodiversity and the state of strained healthcare systems as well as the ageing of the European population over the next 10 years.

These results are expected to contribute to the development of the second Horizon Europe strategic plan, which will cover the period 2025-2027.

The Commission reports that it received 2,788 responses and 265 position papers.

2,558 of these responses and 108 of these presentations concerned the section on the direction of the strategic plan.

The European Commission announces that it will publish the analysis document of the strategic plan in May. A summary of the results of the consultation will be included in the document.
