EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Internal market

European Parliament calls for more digital public administration in EU

On Tuesday 18 April, MEPs adopted an own-initiative report (557 votes in favour, 50 against and 36 abstentions) calling for the acceleration of the digitalisation of public services that support the functioning of the internal market. Easily accessible online administrative procedures can reduce the burden and barriers for businesses, especially SMEs, say MEPs.

This must be done in a way that respects privacy, and is also careful to include all citizens, including the elderly, the disabled and vulnerable communities. For example, the MEPs invite the European Commission to “present recommendations to allow individuals to monitor administrative processes that involve them”.

In addition, information on public procurement should be available online, insist MEPs. This will require investing in training and support for administrations. Furthermore, “the interoperability of procurement systems and open data systems can be useful” to increase the efficiency of procedures, according to the MEPs.
