05/04/23 (Agence Europe) – Ahead of the International Roma Day on 8 April, European Commission Vice-President Vĕra Jourová, Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli, and Enlargement and Neighbourhood Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi announced the launch of EQUIROM. Developed with the Council of Europe, the project aims to combat stereotypes of Roma people in the media. “We want to build positive narratives, focusing in particular on Roma women and youth, and to raise awareness about the culture of Roma and history, including about the Roma Holocaust”, they said. Indeed, despite efforts in “several Member States and enlargement countries which actively address antigypsyism and fight against Roma discrimination”, too many Roma people remain discriminated against and excluded from central parts of society (education, housing, employment, healthcare), they lamented (see EUROPE 13095/2).
