30/03/23 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 30 March, the European Commission’s Eurydice network published a report on language learning in the EU. It noted that there is an increasing proportion of pupils learning a foreign language from primary school onwards in all education systems. However, the numbers learning a second foreign language has not increased since the 2017 Eurydice report. While English is the first foreign language that is learned, German and French are the most popular languages when it comes to a second foreign language. Finally, the report finds that students studying in vocational schools have fewer opportunities to learn languages than those in general education. The development of multilingualism is a central element of the European education area, which foresees that by 2025 every citizen should, by the end of his or her schooling, have mastered two languages in addition to his or her own.
