The European Parliament has given its final green light - by 524 votes to 33 with 24 abstentions - to the European Year of Skills, led by Cypriot Loucas Fourlas (EPP), which will start on 9 May and run until 8 March 2024.
The European Year should address skills shortages in the EU’s workforce and promote its development and competitiveness, according to a statement. “It will contribute to the creation of quality jobs, the reduction of skills gaps and mismatches in the EU - in particular the digital divide - and the empowerment of the workforce to realise the full potential of the digital and green transitions”.
The European Year also aims to “establish closer cooperation and dialogue with social partners at enterprise level, civil society entities and non-profit social service providers, while integrating more people into the labour market, in particular women, young people, people with disabilities, people from disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds and displaced people, including refugees from Ukraine”.
