10/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – The EU is releasing €1 million in humanitarian aid for the victims of the fire that broke out on 5 March in the Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, the European Commission announced on Friday 10 March. This emergency aid will fund shelters, slope stabilisation, repair of damaged water and sanitation facilities, emergency health interventions and prevention of disease outbreaks in the camp. Thanks to its EU-funded disaster preparedness programme, the International Organization for Migration was able to deploy response teams immediately after the fire broke out, to help the affected communities and prevent further damage, the Commission says. Twenty-three million euros had been released by the EU in early February to alleviate the Rohingya crisis and strengthen disaster preparedness in the country (see EUROPE 13112/23). (AN)
