01/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced, on 1 February, the release of more than €43 million in emergency aid to address the humanitarian needs of vulnerable people in Myanmar as well as Rohingya refugees and their host communities, mainly in Bangladesh. In Myanmar, €18 million will help meet the growing vital need for protection, food, shelter, healthcare and education since the military coup in 2021. In Bangladesh, more than €23 million is planned to continue the response to the Rohingya crisis, but also to implement disaster preparedness programmes in the country. Two million euros are also earmarked for the Rohingya refugees flowing into South East Asian countries. The IOM has recorded almost 3,300 arrivals in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand in 2022, 290% more than in 2021. (AN)
