02/03/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 2 March, ambassadors of the Member States to the EU meeting in the Political and Security Committee approved additional support for the Somali National Army (SNA) in the amount of €25 million, and to the military component of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) worth €85 million, for 2023. According to a statement issued by the EU Council, both actions are intended to contribute to the transfer of security responsibilities from ATMIS to the SNA, enabling the former to fulfil its mandate while strengthening the capabilities of the latter. For ATMIS, the agreed support will mostly contribute to the troop allowances of the African soldiers deployed. For the SNA, it will focus on the provision of non-lethal equipment and infrastructure works, in close coordination with the European Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-Somalia). (CG)
