28/02/23 (Agence Europe) – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday 28 February that Ukraine would become a member of the Alliance in the “long term”, while noting that the immediate issue was for “Ukraine to prevail as a sovereign, independent nation”. “NATO allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a member of our alliance, but at the same time that that is a long term perspective”, he said during a visit to Finland. At the 2008 Bucharest Summit, the Allies agreed that Ukraine should become a member of NATO when it was ready. On 30 September 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an application for accelerated membership of the Alliance. (CG)
