28/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 28 February during a visit to Serbia, European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, announced a financial package of €2.2 billion that will allow for the substantial modernisation of the Corridor X railways. This railway project links the region to the EU via Croatia, through Belgrade, Niš, Skopje and Greece. It will help to modernise the railways and improve Serbia’s connectivity with other European rail networks, according to the European Commission. In specific terms, an EU grant of up to €600 million is foreseen. €265 million of this amount has already been approved for the Belgrade-Niš high-speed rail line. The rest of the financing package consists of a €1.1 billion loan from the EIB and a €550 million EBRD loan. (CG)
