The European Commission will join the Transboundary Water Cooperation Coalition on behalf of the EU. Without debate, the EU Council authorised, on Tuesday 21 February, the Commission to sign a non-binding instrument to this effect.
The Coalition aims to ensure sustainable water management, provide an adequate response to water-related development needs and promote peace, security and stability in the context of global climate change and increasing water demand.
This is an initiative of the secretariat of the UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, which was launched on 7 December 2022 at the UN-Water Summit on Groundwater in Paris.
On 17 January, the EU Council authorised the Commission to start negotiations to join the Coalition on behalf of the EU. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
