20/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – The Council of the EU on Monday 19 December adopted a decision on the notification of the requirements of the carbon offset and reduction scheme for international aviation (‘CORSIA’). This decision should enable Member States to fulfil their first annual obligation to notify EU-based operators of their ‘CORSIA’ clearing requirements, in accordance with their international commitments within the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). “The EU will now implement the system of requirements that will bring us closer to climate neutrality by 2050”, commented Czech Transport Minister Martin Kupka. The participation of states in the pilot phase between 2021 and 2023 and in the first phase (2024-2026) is voluntary. The EU Council adopted a decision in June 2020 confirming the participation of EU Member States in ‘CORSIA’ from the start of its voluntary phase. (TM)
