20/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – Europol sounded the alarm on Monday 19 December about the rise of transnational right-wing terrorist networks which are organised on the Internet. On 15 December, Europol coordinated an operation involving specialised units from 13 Member States and the UK to detect terrorist content online. This led to the reporting of 831 items on 34 platforms. While “the threat posed by violent extremism and terrorism is still on the rise”, Europol believes that “the abuse of the internet continues to be an important aspect of violent right-wing radicalisation and recruitment”. Indeed, the perpetrators of the May 2022 Buffalo and Bratislava terrorist attacks (see EUROPE 13047/11) belonged to transnational online communities and were inspired by other right-wing extremists. Europol has therefore called on platforms to step up their moderation efforts. (HS)
