European Commission approves two new protected designations of origin from Austria and Netherlands

19/12/2022 (Agence Europe)The European Commission announced, on Monday 19 December, that it had approved two new protected designations of origin (PDOs) from Austria and the Netherlands. ‘Rosalia’ wines from Austria are red and rosé wines produced on the eastern slopes of the Rosalia mountain, which runs along the border between the provinces of Lower Austria and Burgenland in the east of the country. The daytime heat allows the grapes to ripen well and, therefore, to develop the tart cherry and plum flavour typical of the grape varieties. Cool nights, on the other hand, mainly lead to the formation of primary aromas, giving the wines a typical fruitiness and moderate tannins. The ‘Rivierenland’ wines of the Netherlands come from the contiguous region that separates and follows the rivers flowing from Germany and the province of Limburg through the province of Gelderland to Gorinchem.
