19/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – At least 43% of the 176 online retailers surveyed over a month violated Directive 98/6/EC on the indication of prices of products offered to consumers during Black Friday 2022, according to the results of a survey published on Monday 19 December by the European Commission and the competent authorities of the EU27. The directive requires shops, including online marketplaces, to indicate the lowest price applied to the product in the previous 30 days when advertising a discount. However, more than half of the 16,000 products checked advertised a Black Friday price reduction, and of these, 23% were clearly incompatible with EU legislation prohibiting unfair commercial practices. The authorities will now ask the traders concerned to stop these deceptive discounting practices. (AN)
