17/11/2022 (Agence Europe) – This is the light at the end of a ten-year tunnel for the directive on gender balance among directors of publicly traded companies (“Women on Boards”). The European Parliament’s Committees on Gender Equality (FEMM) and Legal Affairs (JURI) Committees adopted their recommendation in the second reading on Thursday 17 November, by an overwhelming majority (42 votes in favour, 2 abstentions). This endorses the Council of the EU’s position adopted in October (see EUROPE 13044/24). The text stipulates that the Member States need 40% of their executive directorships to be held by women by 2026, or 33% if the target is extended to non-executive directors. The position will be put to the vote in the European Parliament at the next plenary session in Strasbourg. A debate is already scheduled for Monday 21 November.
