EU believes deadly missile in Poland was result of massive wave of Russian missile launches

The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on behalf of the EU on the evening of Wednesday 16 November that the deadly missile strike in Poland was due to massive Russian attacks on Ukraine.

This tragic incident is the result of another massive wave of missile strikes on Ukrainian cities by Russia (on Tuesday), targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. These attacks are blatant violations of international law,” he said in his statement.

The High Representative underlined the EU’s “unwavering” unity, determination and full solidarity with Poland and its people. “The EU fully supports the ongoing Polish investigation to establish the facts on the ground,” he said, adding that he remained in close contact with EU partners, including NATO, on the next steps. Initial findings suggest that it was a Ukrainian air defence missile.

For its part, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on 16 November that the country had “immediately provided full clarification that the Russian armed forces were not involved in this incident”.

In his statement, the High Representative reiterated that the EU would remain firm in its support for Ukraine’s inherent right to self-defence against Russian aggression, “as enshrined in the UN Charter”, and that it would continue its strong political, military, humanitarian and financial support to Ukraine.

Borrell also warned that the EU would continue to denounce Russia for its manipulation of information and interference and step up pressure on Russia to end the war and withdraw from Ukraine’s territory, “including through restrictive measures”. A 9th sanctions package is currently being negotiated. The High Representative further stressed that Russia, all perpetrators of wrongdoing and accomplices will be held accountable.
