European Commission and Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations refine their cooperation

The European Commission and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) published a joint letter of intent on Monday 24 October regarding more effective cooperation between the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) and CEPI in supporting the development and supply of medical countermeasures against high-impact pathogens.

CEPI is a public-private partnership that works towards public-private collaboration for equitable access to medical countermeasures, especially vaccines. The coalition is supported by grants from the European Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.

The letter, which is not legally binding, mentions several commitments by both parties to maximise the impact of their respective initiatives and minimise shortcomings. The letter includes provisions to improve the exchange of knowledge, information and best practices between the parties, a provision for bi-annual meetings of HERA and CEPI representatives at the highest level and a provision for the creation of separate bilateral working groups at operational level.
