24/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – In the run-up to International Polio Day on Monday 24 October, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen and Andrea Ammon, Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), issued a joint statement on 23 October highlighting that polio remains an international threat. The signatories of the statement point to the recent discovery of vaccine-derived polioviruses and a case of paralytic polio in Europe and the United States after 20 years of no polio cases in Europe. Ms Kyriakides, Ms Urpilainen and Ms Ammon therefore called for polio vaccination in the EU and affirmed European support for vaccination worldwide. Link to the statement: https://aeur.eu/f/3rf (EV)
