In an emergency resolution on human rights violations in Haiti, adopted on Thursday 6 October, the European Parliament strongly condemns the acts of violence and destruction perpetrated by some 200 gangs and deplores the looting of food and humanitarian supplies as well as attacks on humanitarian workers.
MEPs deplore that since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, gangs have gained considerable power and instilled a pervasive sense of insecurity among the Haitian population. “Some of these gangs have ties to state actors and alleged connections to politicians, threaten to destabilise the government with their greater resources and weaponry”, the resolution said.
MEPs call for an immediate end to these criminal activities and an end to impunity for the perpetrators.
The EU is urged to use its human rights sanctions regime “against those engaged in or supporting gang violence, criminal activities or human rights abuses, including corruption”.
The Parliament also calls on all stakeholders in Haiti to find a lasting and consensual solution to the current political impasse to allow free legislative and presidential elections to be held as soon as security conditions allow.
