Remaining resources of 2014-2020 cohesion funds could contribute to financing of REPowerEU

06/10/2022 (Agence Europe)According to several sources contacted by EUROPE on Thursday 6 October, one of the avenues explored to financially reinforce the REPowerEU initiative (see EUROPE 13036/5) would be to mobilise the remaining resources of the 2014-2020 cohesion policy. The potential amounts could be as high as around €1 billion. How to use them and the timing of such an initiative still needs to be determined in consultation with the EU Council and the European Parliament. As a reminder, Member States have until 31 December 2023 to commit the expenditure foreseen in the 2014-2020 Partnership Agreements. While the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (Ecofin) detailed on Tuesday 4 October the financing modalities to be included in the national recovery plans (see EUROPE 13035/14), the contours of the financing of REPowerEU are gradually becoming clearer.
