06/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has conducted a risk assessment of an increase in diphtheria cases among migrants in Europe. According to the ECDC, the risk is very low among the population residing in Europe: vaccination coverage against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis is high and the probability of an individual residing in the European Union developing the disease is very low. The ECDC does not rule out secondary infections or severe forms of diphtheria among unvaccinated or immunocompromised people. The Centre makes a number of recommendations, particularly for staff in migrant reception centres, for early detection, prevention and treatment measures. The ECDC emphasises the need to maintain routine vaccination programmes. Link to the recommendation: https://aeur.eu/f/3ga (EV)
