EU Member States reach agreement on eighth sanctions package

The ambassadors of the Member States to the European Union (Coreper) agreed, on Wednesday 5 October, on the eighth package of sanctions against Russia in response to its military aggression against Ukraine (see EUROPE 13031/2).

(EU) Ambassadors reached a political agreement on new sanctions against Russia, as a strong EU response to Putin’s illegal annexation of Ukraine’s territories. The written procedure follows, the sanctions enter into force as soon as they are published in the Official Journal”, announced the Czech ambassador, Edita Hrda, whose country holds the Presidency of the EU Council. The written procedure will end this Thursday at 10am (Brussels time).

According to the Lithuanian ambassador, Arnoldas Pranckevičius, the measures include a cap on oil prices, new import and export bans worth €7 billion on steel, wood, machinery, aviation, plastics or chemicals, and a ban on various services. Another 35 individuals and companies involved in the war, sham referendums in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories and pro-Russian propaganda are also sanctioned, he said.
