Russian invasion of Ukraine affects short-term outlook for EU agricultural markets

The European Commission published, on Wednesday 5 October, the latest report on the short-term outlook for EU agricultural markets, which shows that agricultural production continues to be affected by the consequences of the Russian-led war in Ukraine.

Total EU cereal production is expected to reach 270.9 million tonnes in 2022/2023 or 7.8% lower than last year. The biggest fall was in maize (55.5 million tonnes, or -23.7%). This decrease is mainly due to the summer drought. Soft wheat production will only be down by 2.4%, with production forecast at 127 million tonnes. EU cereal exports are expected to reach 51 million tonnes, 6.5% more than last season and 20.9% above the five-year average.

EU olive oil production is expected to decrease by 25% in 2022/2023. In addition, the Commission expects a slight decrease (-0.5%) in EU milk production.

EU beef production is expected to fall by 0.6% in 2022, mainly due to structural adjustment in the beef and dairy sector, despite high beef prices. EU exports could fall by 1%.
