Nordstream 1 and 2 pipeline leaks are not coincidence, say EU leaders

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, as well as the Prime Ministers of Poland and Denmark and the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, have all expressed their concern following three leaks in the Nordstream 1 and 2 pipelines between Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 September.

All available information indicates that the leaks are the result of deliberate acts”, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, said on Wednesday 28 September. He added that “any deliberate disruption of Europe’s energy infrastructure is absolutely unacceptable and will provoke a united and robust response”.

Ms von der Leyen and Mr Michel stressed the need for an urgent investigation to determine those responsible for the alleged sabotage.

There should be no immediate impact on the EU’s security of supply, according to Ms Simson.

Both pipelines were filled with gas, but were not supplying the EU. The flow via Nordstream 1 has been stopped for several weeks, and the supply via Nordstream 2 has not yet started.

The leaks, which are suspected to have been caused by explosions, occurred as the new Baltic Pipe, linking Norway and Poland, has just been launched (see EUROPE 13030/24). (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
